Designer Spotlight: Tom Dixon

Designer Spotlight: Tom Dixon

The Man Who Lit Up the World of Design

Behind every remarkable design is a story and Tom Dixon’s is anything but conventional. Born in Tunisia and raised in England, Dixon’s creative journey began not in a classroom, but on stage. After a short stint at art school, he left to tour as a bassist in the band Funkapolitan. It was during this time that he discovered welding, turning salvaged metal into sculptural furniture. These early experiments, often crafted live in a London nightclub, laid the foundation for his signature industrial aesthetic and fearless approach to design.

By the late 1980s, Dixon was designing for Italian furniture giant Cappellini, creating the iconic S Chair, and in 1994, he launched the breakout Jack Light. Following a successful revitalisation of British retailer Habitat, he founded his own brand in 2002. Today, Tom Dixon Studio is a globally recognised design powerhouse celebrated for bold forms, unexpected materials, and a commitment to redefining the boundaries of lighting and furniture. His journey is a testament to the power of reinvention, experimentation, and creative risk.

What sets Tom Dixon apart is not just his designs but his design philosophy. As he puts it, “My work has always been an exercise in dissatisfaction with factory-made furniture and lighting.” It’s that relentless curiosity that makes every piece in his collection more than a light, it’s an artwork.
