Set The Mood for Dining

Transform your dining room into the perfect entertaining space with layered lighting. Nook Collections can help you find the perfect statement pendant for above the dining table, dimmable wall lights for ambience, and table lamps to illuminate dark corners. We have curated an extensive range of lighting fixtures, perfect for a dining room setting. Whether you're working with modern, contemporary interiors, maximalist colour drenching, or a family-friendly, scandi-inspired design, Nook Collections can help you find the perfect piece.

Within the dining room, if you have a large dining table, the obvious choice is a pendant light. Depending on the interiors, size of the room, and height of the ceiling, you can either go for something bold and dramatic with light that lingers over the table, or something more subtle and expansive for light to reach further than the table.

Beyond the dining table pendant, use wall lights as art pieces, and a table lamps on a side buffet or cabinet to set the mood - dining lighting should be layered and dimmable throughout the evening.

FAQs

Whether you have a dedicated dining room or you're creating a dining zone within open space living, we get a lot of questions about choosing the right lights. Here are the most common questions we get from customers.

How does dining lighting differ from other rooms?

Dining room lighting is different from the kitchen, bedroom or lounge because it is required at different points of the day. Generally, the dining is used for meals - perhaps from breakfast, perhaps just dinner and when you're entertaining guests. Either way, dining room needs to be balanced, dimmable, and usually layered with ambient, task and accent lighting.

A central pendant light or chandelier over the dining table creates a focal point, while dining room wall lights or dimmable fixtures add atmosphere.

How do I choose the right light fixture for the dining room?

The right fixture will depend on the space, the shape of the dining table, ceiling height, and overall interiors. For long and rectangular tables, we recommend a linear pendant light or a cluster of pendants. For round tables, we recommend a single statement piece or chandelier.

How high should a pendant hang?

A dining room light should hang ~750-850mm above the table. This allows for effective lighting without obstructing views across the table. You can adjust height depending on ceiling height and fixture size, but it's important to make sure it's not a nuisance while sharing a meal!
