Art Deco: Your Lighting Guide

Art Deco: Your Lighting Guide

Art Deco remains one of the most recognisable and enduring design movements - a style defined by geometry, glamour and precision. Emerging in France in the 1910s and gaining global momentum after the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industries, it shaped the visual language of the 1920s and 30s.

At Nook, Art Deco is not just a historical reference - it is a continuing influence. Within our Art Deco collection, this design language is reimagined through contemporary lighting, where sculptural silhouettes, rich materiality and diffused light define the mood of a space.

The Architectural Origins of Deco

Art Deco architecture evolved through three key expressions:

  • Zigzag (Jazz Moderne) - bold, decorative, and highly geometric

  • Classical Moderne (WPA style) - more restrained, with symmetry and simplified detailing

  • Streamline Moderne - softer, more fluid, with curved forms and horizontal lines

In the United States, early influence can be traced to the Chicago Tribune Tower Competition and the atmospheric drawings of Hugh Ferriss, where light and shadow became central to architectural expression.

That same idea carries into lighting today - where fixtures don’t just illuminate, but shape space.

Art Deco in Contemporary Living

Today, Art Deco exists in two distinct expressions - vintage and modern.

Vintage Art Deco celebrates the original language of the 1920s and 30s, rich in ornament, intricate detailing and luxurious materials. In contrast, modern Art Deco (Neo Deco) refines these elements - simplifying forms, softening proportions, and reinterpreting geometry through a more contemporary lens.

At Nook Collections, this translates into a curated approach to lighting that draws from both. Pieces that honour the essence of Deco - geometry, materiality and atmosphere - while feeling considered, elevated and relevant to contemporary interiors.

What Defines Art Deco Lighting

At its core, Art Deco is about balance - bold geometry softened by rich materiality.

In interiors and lighting, this reveals itself through:

  • Geometric precision
Zigzags, stepped forms, arches and symmetry create a strong architectural rhythm.
  • Material contrast
Polished metals - brass, chrome, steel - are paired with glass, stone and lacquered finishes, allowing light to reflect and refract.
  • Refined ornamentation
Motifs such as sunbursts, fluting and linear detailing bring decoration, but in a controlled, stylised way.
  • A sense of glamour
Smoked glass, opal finishes and metallic accents introduce depth, warmth and quiet luxury.

This is a style that feels expressive, yet structured - decorative, but never excessive.

Sculptural Statements

The Pirce Pendant Light and Pirce Ceiling Light bring a sense of movement and drama. Their layered, flowing forms echo Deco’s fascination with geometry and rhythm, casting soft, sculptural shadows across a space.

Similarly, the Diamante Ceiling Light introduces a more structured expression - its faceted form reflecting light with a subtle brilliance reminiscent of classic Deco glamour.

In true Art Deco, a chandelier often becomes the defining focal point - a sculptural centrepiece like Puppet Chandelier and Diadema C2 Chandelier, that anchors the room while elevating symmetry and scale.

At Nook Collections, this is expressed through a curated range of statement pieces from layered, geometric forms to more fluid, contemporary interpretations - offering a refined take on the classic Deco chandelier.

Refined Wall Lighting

Wall lighting plays a defining role in Art Deco interiors - adding symmetry, depth, and softness.

The Tresa Wall Light, Vegas Wall Light and Vintage Wall Light offer clean lines and elegant proportions, ideal for hallways or bedside settings.

For a softer, more luminous effect, the Aballs Wall Light pairs opal glass with metallic detailing - a perfect balance of warmth and polish.

The Lighto II Wall Light adds a more architectural edge, bringing structure and contrast into contemporary Deco spaces.

Table Lamps with Presence

Table lighting in Art Deco is never secondary - it adds intimacy and detail like Regina Table Lamp.

The Pinecone Table Lamp is inherently decorative, with its textured glass surface catching and diffusing light in a way that feels both vintage and refined.

In contrast, the Patroclo Table Lamp introduces a more expressive, almost industrial interpretation of Deco - where light interacts with material to create depth and shadow.

Linear & Architectural Forms

For larger spaces, the Griston Linear Pendant Light or Puppet Linear Pendant Light offers a more architectural take on Art Deco - clean, balanced, and perfectly suited to dining or kitchen settings where symmetry is key.

A Style That Shapes Atmosphere

Art Deco is more than a visual style - it is a way of designing with confidence.

It celebrates contrast, honours material, and uses light to create mood and presence. Each piece plays a role, not just in how a space looks, but in how it feels.
