Boronia House: A Quiet Kind of Country

Designed for a growing family in the rural landscape of Glenorie, Boronia House is a timeless expression of warmth, simplicity and quiet restraint - a retreat shaped to complement its surroundings rather than compete with them.

A restrained palette of natural stone, timber and tactile finishes defines the interiors, drawing on the muted tones, textures and soft light of the property. In the kitchen, the Coral Linear Rod 7lt Pendant brings a play of hand-blown glass above the bench, while the Honey Pendant casts a warm, diffused glow across the generous volume of the living area.

Boronia House is a study in cohesion - between beauty and function, architecture and landscape, refinement and everyday ease. Here, lighting softens volume, highlights materiality and brings a calm sense of luxury to rural living.

The living room: a softer geometry

The living area is where the home's generous volume is felt most, and where light had to do the most work in drawing it in. Here, the Honey Pendant Light by Italian maker Stilnovo takes its cue from the natural geometry of the honeycomb.

Its modular, hexagonal form can be arranged in a range of configurations, and beneath it, wavy opaline diffusers spread a warm, even glow. The effect is generous rather than dramatic: light that settles across the room instead of pooling in one place, giving a large space the intimacy of a smaller one.

It is a fitting reference for a rural home. Nature's most efficient structure, rendered in a way that feels both architectural and gentle, sitting easily alongside the stone and timber around it.

The kitchen: glass, held in a line

In a kitchen built around stone and timber, the Coral Linear Rod 7lt Pendant Light brings something more fluid. Seven discs of clear Swedish glass hang along a single linear rod, each one hand-blown in a free-formed shape, so no two are quite alike.

The Coral family was designed in 2019 by Oliver Höglund and is still made to order in Currumbin, on the Gold Coast. There is a quiet logic to finding an Australian-made, handcrafted piece in a home so rooted in its own landscape.

By day the glass almost disappears, catching the light from the windows. By evening it becomes the room's focal point, casting a soft play of light and shadow across the bench below - a balance of direct and indirect illumination that suits a space where the family both works and gathers.

A few finer points

On lighting a rural home. Country interiors are shaped by daylight, so the best evening lighting continues that mood rather than overriding it. Warm, diffused sources and natural materials such as glass keep a room connected to its setting after dark.

On linear pendants over a kitchen island. A linear pendant follows the length of the bench, spreading light evenly across the work surface while giving the room a single, considered focal point. Hand-blown glass adds softness where stone and joinery are more structured.

On large living spaces. Generous volumes benefit from a pendant with presence and a broad, diffused spread of light. A modular piece can be scaled to the room, so the light feels proportionate rather than lost.
